What is Lesson Study?
“Lesson Study is an ongoing teacher professional learning model developed in Japan. It is a cyclic process involving a group of teachers reflecting and refining lessons that have been collaboratively planned and implemented. Lesson study is a systematic approach of inquiry that focuses on the student’s learning not on the teacher”. (Catherine Flamos, 2012, Community of schools conference.)
Why Lesson Study?
•Teacher led professional development- actively engages teachers in an enquiry approach to their practice by identifying an area of instructional need, researching and building on previous knowledge, then making instructional changes based on evidence.
•Teacher learning is directly linked to student needs and school targets
•Promotes teamwork and collective responsibility for improved student performance
•Draws on expertise of teachers- ‘Teacher Leaders’
•Allows teachers to share and design best practice. (Catherine Flamos, 2012, Community of schools conference.)
